OLYMPIC GAMES MILESTONES*
Environmental audits are implemented for planning and construction
More than 80% of journeys to and from the Games are made by bus or train
Major renovation works help to regenerate a formerly rundown part of the city
The 21-acre Centennial Olympic Park becomes the largest urban green space created in the US for 25 years
Meals at the Olympic Village and other non-competition venues are served on 900,000 environmentally friendly paper plates, which are then composted or recycled into solid fuel or cardboard products
INSTITUTIONAL MILESTONES
The IOC is represented at the UN Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro
The topic of environment is included for the first time in the Olympic Games Candidature Questionnaire (used for the 2000 edition of the Olympic Games)
The first World Conference on Sport & the Environment is organised by the IOC in cooperation with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP)
The IOC creates its Sport & Environment Commission
References to the environment and sustainable development are included in the Olympic Charter
The IOC publishes the Olympic Movement’s Agenda 21 (“Sport for Sustainable Development”)
